ABOUT SATI2020

The Sustainable Alpine Tourism Initiative (SATI) is a conference series aimed at progressing knowledge sharing and collaboration on sustainability in alpine tourism. SATI2020 is unique as it convenes senior corporate executives, industry leaders, hotels, resorts, policy makers, and sustainability experts in academia and innovation to share ideas and insights that tackle key sustainability challenges in alpine tourism.

WORLD LEADING PANELS

Over a series of panels, each conference will feature world leading experts from across the alpine sports, infrastructure and hospitality sectors, each presenting a progressive vision and roadmap for how their organisations and industries can support the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and circular economy approaches. This approach can help industries to build back better with sustainability centric strategies post Covid-19. SATI also includes networking sessions where delegates will be able to delve deeper into the topics and hear direct from speakers. These sessions are facilitated by researchers from the Cambridge University Institute for Sustainability Leadership and other experts.

BACKGROUND

The concept for SATI was created by the initiative’s founder, Sarisher Mann. Whilst studying a Master’s at the University of Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) starting in 2018, and additionally working in sustainable finance communication, Sarisher – a keen skier and hiker – was keen to apply her circular economy research in alpine tourism. There is a huge opportunity to share knowledge on sustainability, and to create cross-industry and sector coalitions across the alpine sports, infrastructure and hospitality sectors.

The ultimate aim of SATI is to accelerate sustainability leadership in alpine tourism through collaboration and cross-sector communication, as all stakeholders in the mountain regions can support the achievement of the UN SDGs. These positive and purposeful narratives have never been more important in a post Covid-19 world.

Dame Polly Courtice, Director of the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership, The University of Cambridge:

“Accelerating sustainability over the next decade to achieve the SDGs will require greater knowledge sharing across industries and disciplines. This applies just as much to alpine tourism as it does to all of the other ways in which we live our lives and spend our leisure.”
